Classic Scalloped Potatoes

🧾 Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 garlic cloves (minced)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 1 small onion (thinly sliced, optional)

👨‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  3. Add flour and whisk for 1 minute to form a roux.
  4. Gradually add milk while whisking until smooth and thickened.
  5. Stir in garlic, salt, and pepper.
  6. Layer half of the potatoes in a greased baking dish (add onions if using).
  7. Pour half of the sauce over the potatoes.
  8. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake another 20–25 minutes until tender and lightly golden.

🔥 Tips:

  • Slice potatoes very thin for even cooking.
  • Let it rest 10 minutes before serving for a perfect texture.
  • You can add a little cheese if you want a hybrid version 😉

  • Scalloped Potatoes → creamy white sauce, usually no cheese
  • Potatoes au Gratin → richer, with cheese and a golden crust
