There are certain dishes that feel like they carry a story with every bite. For many families, John Wayne Casserole is one of them. Named after the larger-than-life Hollywood cowboy, this hearty baked dish has the kind of flavor that makes you feel like you’re sitting around a ranch table after a long day on the range.
For older generations who grew up watching John Wayne stride across the silver screen, this casserole is more than just dinner. It’s a little taste of nostalgia, a reminder of simpler times, and above all, a comfort food recipe that never fails to bring people together. Packed with seasoned beef, fresh peppers, a creamy cheese layer, and a biscuit base that bakes up golden and tender, it’s the perfect meal for family dinners, potlucks, or just a cozy evening at home.
Ingredients:
1 lb (450 g) ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup milk
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
3 cups frozen hash brown potatoes (or shredded raw potatoes)
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
1/4 tsp black pepper
Optional: 1/2 tsp paprika or onion powder for extra flavor
Instructions:
Preheat oven: 350°F (175°C).
Cook the beef: In a skillet, brown the ground beef with the chopped onion until fully cooked. Drain any excess fat.
Mix the creamy base: In a large bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, milk, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
Assemble casserole:
In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spread half of the hash browns evenly on the bottom.
Layer the cooked beef and onions over the potatoes.
Pour the creamy soup mixture evenly over the beef.
Top with the remaining hash browns and sprinkle the rest of the cheddar cheese on top.
Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the top is golden brown.
Serve: Let it sit for 5–10 minutes before serving for easier slicing.
This casserole is rich, creamy, and perfect for family dinners or potlucks.
