Inside the heavy plastic lining wasn’t rotten food, discarded mail, or household waste.

It was clothes. Dozens of pristine, high-end garments—designer dresses, silk blouses, tailored suits—all ripped to shreds as if someone had taken a pair of heavy shears to them. Beneath the ruined fabric were smashed framed photographs, their glass shattered into fine dust.

I carefully reached past the glass and pulled out a torn piece of photo paper. The image showed Barbara smiling radiantly in a wedding dress beside a tall, dark-haired man whose face had been violently scratched out with a thick marker.

Suddenly, I heard the rumble of a heavy engine turning the corner down the street. The garbage truck was coming.

Panicked, I tied the bag back up as best I could and hurried back to my driveway. As the sanitation workers threw the bags into the compactor, crushing the ruined remnants of what looked like a shattered life, I realized Barbara wasn’t just throwing out trash every morning. She was systematically destroying every physical memory of someone who used to live in that house—piece by painful piece.
