Part 4: The Midnight Search

That night, I couldn’t sleep. The thought of Arthur, the missing husband, and the endless stream of contractor bags filled my head. If she had spent months shredding his clothes and smashing his belongings, what else had gone into those bags before I looked?

At 2:00 AM, a bright light flashed outside my bedroom window.

I peeked through the blinds. Two police cruisers were parked in Barbara’s driveway with their lights off. Officers stood on her porch alongside the older couple from earlier in the day. They held a search warrant.

I threw on a jacket and stepped onto my porch, watching from the shadows.

Barbara opened the door in her pink robe. She didn’t fight them. She didn’t scream. She simply stepped aside, her face an emotionless mask, and pointed toward the door leading down to the basement.

The officers descended into the dark. Ten minutes passed in agonizing silence. Then, one of the officers rushed back up the stairs, his face pale, frantically calling for medical personnel on his radio.
